The truth about anorexia
And all the things I wish I knew.
- You don’t lose weight like magic
- It isn’t all skinny wrists and black coffee
- You will never be satisfied with the way you look
- This isn’t an “aesthetic”
- It controls your life
- Restricting calories is tiring
- Eating one meal a day or less is very bad for you
- Eating less than 800 calories a day can potentially kill you
- Standing up and almost blacking out is not a “small price to pay”
- Almost all progress is destroyed by binging
- Binging is not going over your calorie limit by 50
- Binging is eating everything in your cupboard – whether it be stale, or sugary or fatty – until your stomach feels like it is going to burst and you are in so much pain
- Binging is eating 4000 calories in one sitting and then crying because you’ll “never be beautiful”
- Cutting does not make you “edgy”
- Scars from cutting last a hell of a long time and explaining scars to your family is difficult
- Exercising to burn 2000 calories is longer and harder than you’d expect
- Starving yourself does not put you in control
- Denying yourself of food is very very unhealthy and should never be adopted as a fast way to lose weight
- The voice in your head will never stop calling you a “fat bitch”
- You will never be “aesthetically ready” to recover
- This will stay with you for your entire life
- You will never be able to look at food the same
- Complete recovery is rarely an option
- This is not an “opt-in, opt-out” situation
- You will lose many friends
- Purging is highly damaging to your teeth, throat and stomach lining
- Purging can potentially cause choking and you can die
- At a BMI of under 16 you are at risk of heart failure
- You will cry every night looking at a bloated stomach
- You will never lose enough weight
- You are already enough
- You do not need to lose weight
- This is not for 6 months
- This does not go away
- You can run away still
- Please
- Run away
